Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from the family, and so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on the word association when she was a teenager. Ford became interested in acting during her teenaged years, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor fit there. Ford, instead of applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place after her third try she applied for and was awarded an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time, she had already made her television debut in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". Tate was seen in television programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate was a regular performer on stage and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy, which became part of her resume in 1996.
